Here is something you might not expect from your REALTOR: I homeschool my daughters. So when a relocating family asks me about homeschooling in Florida, they are not getting a pamphlet answer. They are getting the version from my kitchen table.
The good news: Florida is homeschool friendly
Florida is one of the easier states to homeschool in. You file a one-time letter of intent with your county, keep a portfolio of your child’s work, and complete an annual evaluation (a certified teacher review or standardized test, your choice). No curriculum approval, no mandated hours. Umbrella schools are another popular route that simplifies the paperwork further.
The even better news: you will not be alone
The North Tampa suburbs have one of the strongest homeschool communities I have seen anywhere. Co-ops, park days, sports leagues, and enrichment programs run all week across Land O’ Lakes, Wesley Chapel, and Lutz. Florida also lets homeschoolers join public school extracurriculars and sports, and dual enrollment at state colleges can be tuition-free for high schoolers.
What it means for your home search
Homeschool families shop differently, and I love it. School zones matter less; a bonus room, a big table, and a yard that can absorb energy at 10 am matter more. So does proximity to libraries, parks, and your co-op. When I know a family homeschools, whole different neighborhoods open up, often with better value because everyone else is bidding on the school zone.
Mom to mom
Moving is a big transition for kids, and one of the quiet blessings of homeschooling through a move is that school comes with you. The routine holds steady while the address changes. If you are a homeschool family eyeing Tampa, I would genuinely love to talk, about laws, co-ops, neighborhoods, and where the good library story hours are. Reach me here.
